The Whitman receives excellence award from Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition

BOISE, ID – May 27, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — The Housing Company (THC), brought to you by Idaho Housing and Finance Association, recently received a Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Excellence Award for the Whitman in Pocatello. The Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition, which celebrates the best in affordable rental housing development, awarded the Whitman an honorable mention in the rural housing category. The project was selected as a winner from among 40 applicants from 22 states for six separate categories.

“We’re honored to be recognized for our work on the Whitman,” said Douglas Peterson, director of The Housing Company. “In addition to providing needed affordable housing in Pocatello, this project also allowed us to restore one of the town’s historic buildings.”

The Whitman is a mixed-use development in Pocatello featuring retail space on the first floor with 25 affordable apartments on the three floors above, including 21 one-bedroom and four studio apartments for individuals and families who meet income eligibility requirements. THC began conceptualizing the Whitman in 2004. Construction began in September 2007, and residents began moving into the newly renovated building April 2009. In addition to the construction of modern apartment units, the historic diner, lobby and the building’s façade were restored based on historic photos.

THC, an organization committed to providing rental housing options for Idaho families and senior citizens, has developed 586 housing units statewide, and owns and manages 1,008 units of rental housing throughout the state.
