BOISE, Idaho – January 28, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Idaho Housing and Finance Association is announcing the 2016 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count scheduled for today, Wednesday, January 27, 2016. Idaho Housing will collect and publish the data gathered by over 200 volunteers, with 50 organizations assisting in surveying communities across the state to document the sheltered and unsheltered homeless population and their needs.
The U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires an annual count of sheltered individuals and a biennial count of unsheltered individuals in order to receive federal funding to aid the homeless. Idaho Housing and Finance Association coordinates with regional housing coalitions around the state who in turn work with local volunteers to conduct the annual count. The data collected is used to help with future planning, and to gain a better understanding of community homeless needs across the state.
“Data from this count is very important for planning purposes, and helps our nonprofit partners match needs with available resources,” said Brady Ellis, homeless programs manager at Idaho Housing. “The count tracks changes among the homeless population, and impacts the amount of funding awarded for homeless programs in the state,” he said.

About Point-in-Time Count
The Point-in-Time (PIT) count is a count of sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons on a single night in January. HUD requires that Continuums of Care conduct an annual count of homeless persons who are sheltered in emergency shelter, transitional housing, and Safe Havens, on a single night. Continuums of Care also must conduct a count of unsheltered homeless persons every other year (odd numbered years). Each count is planned, coordinated, and carried out locally. The Housing Inventory Count (HIC) is a point-in-time inventory of provider programs within a Continuum of Care that provide beds and units dedicated to serving persons who are homeless, categorized by five Program Types: Emergency Shelter; Transitional Housing; Rapid Re-housing; Safe Haven; and Permanent Supportive Housing.
